Hello, My name is Briz and I'm a singer/songwriter from Brick, NJ. I've recently written and recorded the "Freedom Stairway" saga, which is based on the Slave Narratives conducted by our government in the 1930's. My "Freedom" songs portray the sacrifice and hardship that slaves endured, and the narratives depict the dangers along the Underground Railroad. I wanted to personally invite you to host a performance of "Freedom Stairway" at your school or library.
“The way he sang, you could actually hear the pain in the voices of the slaves. It’s a better translation then reading alone.” -Dawn Pegram (West Deptford Library patron)-Gloucester Times
Libraries and schools are booking "Freedom" shows throughout the school year to enrich classroom studies because as many are realizing, Black History shouldn’t be relegated to a single day or month.
“We study African American History so we can understand our American History”.-Jesse Jackson
Hear what local educators have to say about Freedom Stairway...
“Briz, Thank you so much for bringing such an innovative program, "Freedom Stairway," to our library. The content was most appropriate for Black History Month and you presented it so well. I especially enjoyed the combination of narration and songs as each complemented the other and made for enjoyable listening. The information about the plight of the slaves was inspiring and educational for all age audiences. How clever to include harmonica playing in the presentation as most youngsters are not familiar with this instrument so this was an added bonus for the audience. Thanks again for a job well done! Please come again”. - Jeannette Taylor-Burlington County Library.
“Original in his music, yet well connected to an important period in US history. This show is appropriate for students and adults of all ages. We feel lucky to have had him at our school multiple times". Marilyn Marilyn Katz-Vice Principal Lawrence Intermediate School.
The "Freedom" songs are sung against a beautiful black and white power point presentation with photos provided by the Library of Congress to enhance the experience. I also include short narratives between songs, and adults and children are encouraged to participate... ..In addition to Freedom Stairway, I have also penned the second and third parts of the trilogy, "Freedom's Cry", (A House Divided) and "Freedom's Glory", (We Shall Overcome). I also perform an excellent environmental program called "Earth Songs" and the historical “Dust Bowl Diaries”. Don't miss out on the chance to include any one of these wonderful programs in your schedule this year.
